What IT does an Australian manufacturer need?
Three things beyond ordinary business IT: an ERP or production system that matches how you actually manufacture, shop-floor equipment and its attached computers kept running, and a network designed for a factory rather than an office. Underneath all three sits the fact that downtime is measured against a line.
That last point reshapes every decision. In an office, an hour without systems is frustrating and largely recoverable. On a production line it is an hour of output that does not exist, with staff paid and equipment idle, and if the stoppage lands mid-batch there may be material loss on top. So the standard for reliability is higher, the tolerance for maintenance windows is narrower, and the calculation behind spending money on resilience is entirely different.
The ERP sits at the centre of most manufacturing businesses, and for Australian manufacturers of this size that increasingly means something like MYOB Advanced or a comparable mid-market platform tying together inventory, production scheduling, purchasing and finance. The platform decision is a business one, and the IT contribution is integration and infrastructure: whether it connects to the systems on the floor, whether people can reach it from where they work, and what it needs to run properly.
Then the shop floor itself, which is where manufacturing IT diverges most sharply. Production equipment often comes with a computer attached, running whatever operating system was current when the machine was commissioned, and that machine may have another fifteen years of useful life. The vendor may not support a newer platform. The software may not tolerate patching. Replacing the computer may require the equipment vendor's involvement and a production stoppage. This is a genuine constraint rather than negligence, and the answer is containment and documentation rather than pretending it can be patched like a laptop.
The network is the third element and the one most often under-specified. Factories are hostile to equipment: dust, heat, vibration, and power that is dirtier than an office ever sees. Cabling runs are long, wireless coverage across a large shed is a design problem rather than a matter of adding access points, and equipment sits in locations where a domestic-grade switch will not survive. Specifying industrial-grade hardware for harsh areas costs more upfront and considerably less than replacing consumer equipment every eighteen months while production waits.
Segmentation deserves particular emphasis because it addresses the largest risk. Production equipment and office computers should not sit on the same flat network, because ransomware reaching an office PC should not be able to touch a machine controller. Separating them limits how far an incident travels and lets you apply different rules to each: the office network gets patched aggressively, the production network gets locked down tightly and changed rarely. That is the single most valuable piece of design work in a manufacturing environment.
Growth is the other force shaping manufacturing IT, and it arrives faster than infrastructure. Shift work is a practical detail that changes support arrangements. A business running two or three shifts has people working when the office is closed, and an IT arrangement covering business hours only leaves the night shift with nobody to call. That does not necessarily mean paying for round-the-clock support, and it does mean deciding explicitly what happens at two in the morning rather than discovering the answer then.
The honest caveats. Not every manufacturer needs everything at once, and network segmentation plus tested backups are the two that repay first. Equipment vendors will sometimes be unhelpful about supported platforms, and that constraint is real rather than something a provider can argue away.
